Born in 1944 in Brooklyn, NY, David Shapiro was an American multimedia artist known for his symbol based abstractions. The motifs which Shapiro incorporated into his work partly derived from Buddhist hand symbols and yoga poses, which he would then translate onto burlap, nylon screes, and Japanese papers, creating a textured surface on top of the canvas. Shapiro studied at the Pratt Institute before receiving his MFA from Indiana University in 1968. Shapiro died in 2014 in New York, NY after a long battle with cancer. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the University of Chicago, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others.
